Senator Sherry Rehman said this during a meeting with an Iranian delegation led by Member of Parliament and President of Iran Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group, Ahmad Amirabadi Farahani.
The meeting was also attended by Mohammad Sorkhabi, the deputy head of the mission at Iranian embassy in Pakistan.
Both sides discussed Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations and stressed the need for parliamentary interaction to strengthen the ties between the two countries.
Senator Rehman, from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), emphasized Pakistan’s deep cultural, trade, economic, and diplomatic ties with bordering Iran and discussed ongoing issues on the Pak-Iran Gas pipeline which was initiated during PPP government.
Both sides underlined the need for building a robust bilateral relationship across the board and for collaborating on issues of common interest.
The meeting recognized the importance of connectivity in the region, along with the need for stability and peace, and concluded with discussions on further enhancement of parliamentary relations between both countries.
Amirabadi Farahani in his remarks said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is eager for more interaction with Pakistan through friendship and parliamentary groups.
Ms. Elham Azad, a member of the Iran-Pakistan Friendship Group, also stated that women are half of the Iranian society and play an important role in social, political, and commercial activities in Iran.
Azad stressed that the long and common borders of Iran and Pakistan can bring the women of the two countries closer to each other. The presence of Iranian women in the cultural, political, and social spheres can be a good model for Muslims around the world.
Tehran MP Mohsen Pirhadi also said the late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is respected by the People in Iran, adding that Senator Rehman, as the head of Senate Foreign Relations Committee, can play an effective role in consolidating and strengthening relations between the two countries.
Ismail Hosseinzehi, a representative of Zahedan in Majlis, said that considering the 950-kilometer common border, there are many commonalities between the two nations and that it is necessary to strengthen the foreign policy interactions to bring the two neighboring countries closer to each other.
Earlier the delegation met with Senator Talha Mahmood, the head of the Iran-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group, in the Senate of Pakistan, and discussed the increase of parliamentary diplomacy between the two neighboring countries.
